Sunday brought the news that Youtuber, activist and longtime sidekick of Regan Benson, Luis “Real Constitutional Upholder” Johnson was recovering from gunshot wounds at the hands of Denver Police after a separate shooting incident in the city Sunday morning.
According to the Do Better Denver Twitter/X account and the CBS News Colorado affiliate, police responded to reports of a shooting near Denver’s 16th Street Mall Sunday morning. When officers came to the scene, bystanders pointed in the direction of the alleged shooter.
Officers encountered an armed Johnson who allegedly refused to drop his weapon. Two officers shot Johnson multiple times after his refused to obey their commands. The same officers performed first aid on Johnson before he was taken to the hospital and later arrested for the original shooting.
According to Do Better Denver, Johnson faces a charge of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the original incident. The victim in the shooting remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

In response to the shooting, Johnson’s brother posted a lengthy statement on the GoFundMe campaign set up to cover hospital bills related to the incident:
My brother, Luis Johnson, is currently fighting for his life after being shot multiple times during a police-involved incident in Denver.
Everything happened so fast, and our family is still trying to process how something like this could happen. Right now, Luis is in the hospital, and we don’t know what the road to recovery will look like—but we know it will be long and challenging.
We are doing everything we can to stay strong for him, but this situation has placed an overwhelming emotional and financial burden on our family. Between emergency medical care, ongoing treatment, and the support needed during his recovery, we are struggling to keep up.
Luis is more than just a name in a headline. He’s a son, a brother, and someone deeply loved by everyone around him. Seeing him in this condition has been one of the hardest things our family has ever faced.
We are asking for support to help cover:
- Medical expenses and hospital care
- Ongoing treatment and rehabilitation
- Daily needs while our family stays by his side
Any donation, no matter the amount, truly means everything to us. If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping Luis in your prayers.
Thank you for standing with Luis Johnson during this difficult time.
Long time associate of Johnson, Regan Benson, also released a statement to her YouTube community page:
Denver, Co- For those of you that haven’t heard yet, the Denver PD shot @T.R.C.U 7 times. He’s alive. This young man is my friend first and foremost. I’m mostly still in shock. I don’t have a lot to say right now other than DPD is loaded with evil liars that want us that expect accountability in policing, D E A D SJVT covered the issue on his channel today. Link pinned. Please give. He’s going to need the best HELP he can get.
Johnson has served as a bodyguard of sorts to Benson on a variety of livestreams over the past year. The YouTuber appeared armed at times in compliance with Colorado’s open carry laws and often has been seen sneaking out of camera range when Benson has either made inappropriate comments or radical comments.
Benson herself released a seven-minute video to her YouTube channel Tuesday afternoon in which she berated a police officer for blocking traffic on a city street with their police vehicle.
That incident was highlighted by a bystander passing Benson who yelled at her to “relax” and the male officer in the vehicle honking his horn at Benson any time Benson screaming at the vehicle.
Eventually, the police took a prisoner out of the back of the car to be identified by a witness. After the witness apparently identified the prisoner, he was released and given paperwork. Benson berated both the male and female officers with the female police officer allegedly called Benson by her name.
The YouTuber walked away from the police vehicle, stating that the police would likely shoot her should she remain on scene.
Benson is scheduled to be sentenced for her recent conviction of doxing a police officer on Friday.
This is a developing news story.
