In one of the stranger arrests of all time, First Amendment Auditor Manuel Mata spent a night in jail after being arrested in his own front yard in Fort Worth, Texas, after initially resolving an issue between another auditor and police when a second group of police officers arrived and promptly arrested Mata for interference.
YouTuber and First Amendment Auditor Harvey Freebird shared the story of Thursday night. According to Freebird’s account, he, Carolyn “Carolina in Fort Worth” Rodriguez and an auditor named Hillsborough Highlights were meeting Mata at his house.
New to the area, Hillsborough Highlights went to the wrong house. When he got out of his car, he was confronted by the homeowners who thought his camera tripod was a long knife. He asked for water, the homeowners called police, he left and eventually found his way to Mata’s house.
Mata, Rodriguez and Hillsborough Highlights were standing in Mata’s front yard when police arrived. Initially, they were able to resolve the issue with the two police officers. The man showed he wasn’t carrying a weapon, and things seemed to have been cleared up.
However, Mata gave an aggressive goodbye as a second set of police officers arrived. That set of officers had no idea that the issue had been resolved, despite Rodriguez screaming that everything was fine.
Mata and the more aggressive of the new officers had an aggressive verbal back and forth and Mata ended up in handcuffs for what the officer later called interference. Carolina’s video ends soon after.
Unlike the night before, when Jose “Chille” DeCastro went live and an all-star crew of Florida auditors protested the arrest of Chuck Bronson, no such mass protest happened at first. The protest came in a much-diminished form Friday afternoon as Harvey Freebird went to bail out Mata.
Mata was bailed out without further incident on Friday, with details on his arrest, future court dates and even charges unknown at this time.
The YouTuber is currently suing Fort Worth police officer Matthew Krueger for allegedly stalking him leading to an arrest on February 4, 2024.
Mata is seeking:
All appropriate relief at law and equity;
Economic losses on all claims as allowed by law;
Compensatory and consequential damages, including damages for emotional distress, humiliation, loss of enjoyment of life, and other pain and suffering on all claims allowed by law in an amount to be determined at trial;
Punitive damages;
Attorneys’ fees and the costs, including expert witness fees, on all claims allowed by law;
Pre-and post-judgment interest at the lawful rate; and
Any other appropriate relief at law and equity that this Court deems just and proper.
Mata arrest comes just two days after he had filed an amended complaint in the lawsuit.
Krueger is the same officer who was involved in an ugly incident with Rodriguez in 2024 that resulted in hospitalization of the YouTuber before she was arrested and later convicted of interference charges.
The Fort Worth police officer initially was dismissed by the police force over the incident but would later gain his job back in 2025.
He was not involved in Thursday’s incident.
We will continue monitor and provide updates on this incident as we receive them.
