First amendment auditing superstar and former YouTuber James “James Freeman” Springer filed multiple motions this week in order to change his bond conditions and his attorney as he faces legal consequences for a domestic violence incident earlier in the month that resulted in a low speed car chase and Freeman’s extended stay in the Pima County Adult Correctional facility.
Springer was originally arrested and charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanor charges with his bond set at $40,000.00. While Springer was apparently content to sit in jail, his friend Roy “Pigs Under Pressure” Tripoloni stepped in and organized a crowd sourcing campaign that raised over $70,000.00 for the jailed activist.
Tripoloni’s fund remains so popular that despite Springer being out of jail for over a week, it’s still winning the daily GoFundMe leaderboards. Saturday was no exception, as his campaign brought in $135.00 towards the goal of freeing Springer from jail.
Its nearest competition came from our own On-Going Expenses campaign, which brought in $112.00 for the day, Central Tyrant Investigations’ Justice for Unlawful Arrest in Paduch campaign brought in $20.00 and Angel “Kansas City Accountability” Moses Justice for Unlawful Arrest in Ohio fund which took in $10.00. Combined, the three funds took in $145.00, barely besting Springer’s total for the day.
Springer’s first motion was to remove Kristian Salter, Esq., as his appointed attorney. Salter was appointed to his case on May 21, 2026, at this arraignment due to an administrative error. Attorney Ryan LaMaster had been previously appointed as his attorney on May 6 and had been working with Springer during his stay in jail.
Judge Howard Fell granted that request on May 26.
LaMaster then filed for changes in Springer’s bond conditions, writing:
Mr. Springer is charged with two counts of Disorderly Conduct, two counts of Threatening or Intimidating, and one count of Criminal Damage, all of which are class 1 misdemeanor domestic violence offenses. Those offenses name either Mr. Springer’s wife, Alicia Springer, or his 16-year-old daughter, E.S., as victims. Mr. Springer is additionally charged with one count of Unlawful Flight from Law Enforcement, a class 5 felony.
At the time of Mr. Springer’s initial appearance, when the $40,000 bond amount was set, Mr. Springer faced more numerous and serious charges in this matter. At the time, Mr. Springer’s faced charges including Disorderly Conduct involving a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument pursuant to A.R.S. § 13-2904(A)(6), a domestic violence offense, and Misconduct Involving Weapons pursuant to A.R.S. § 13-3102(A)(1)(a). He also faced additional misdemeanor domestic violence allegations. A grand jury ultimately did not indict Mr. Springer on any weapons-related charges.
Mr. Springer’s wife, Alicia Springer, has been in contact with undersigned counsel and does not object to having contact with Mr. Springer1. Alicia and Mr. Springer remain married and have six children together, five of whom are minors. Alicia further does not object to the quick setting of this matter on Court’s morning calendar on Thursday, May 28th, if possible.
Mr. Springer has ties to the Tucson community, having lived in the area from approximately 1992 until 2011, and then returning to the area in December 2024, residing in Sahuarita. Mr. Springer’s father, brother, and sister also live in the Tucson area.
Mr. Springer is receiving assistance from local associates while released to ensure that he has stable housing away from the listed victims in this case.
Instead of immediately granting LaMaster’s request for a hearing on the change in bond conditions for May 28, Judge Christopher Browning set the hearing for June 3, 2026.
We will continue to monitor court records for updates on Springer’s on-going charges.
