“Retired” Activist for the homeless Regan Benson verbally assaulted an Englewood police officer during a livestream on Wednesday as police attempted to interact with a homeless man who had taken residence on a park bench alongside a busy road.
The man, who Regan named as “Robert” had been living on the park bench for over a week in near freezing weather conditions. He multiple blankets lining the park bench and refused hosing services from both Englewood’s AllHealth homeless outreach program, the police, and Benson before Benson started her live stream.
As the live stream started, Benson was in the middle of berating one of three unidentified Englewood police officers as they engaged with Robert. Verbally harassing and degrading one of the officers, Benson claimed the man “deserved it” because the officer allegedly gave her an attitude in the four minutes she recorded before going live.
The officers ultimately gave Robert a ticket for urinating in public based on a complaint called in by a local business. Robert again refused all help, and as the police were leaving the scene, Benson followed the targeted officer, continuing to berate and insult the man until the vehicle drove away.
Benson then returned to her car and explained that she had been talking to Robert for an hour before the police arrived on scene. She claimed she had bought Robert cigarettes and was preparing to buy him food as she observed him from a distance. She then noticed that two other homeless men joined him on the bench and claimed she would buy them all food.
The YouTuber then stated that the police report she made on Friday about an Officer “Gifford” had no updates and she believed that it would go nowhere. Benson had confronted the officer after he had criticized her filming a family in crisis at an Englewood area Walgreens.
