Wednesday’s jury deliberations in the Karen Read murder trial ended early as a juror had a pre-existing appointment that required the juror to leave by 4PM ET, resulting in jurors going home a half an hour early.
The day started with Judge Beverly Cannone granting the request by the jury to leave early due to the existing appointment. She explained that the juror had notified her of the conflict well in advance and they had planned to have a shortened day to allow for the juror to catch a bus to the appointment.
Around mid-day, the court was back in session multiple times to address a demand from the defense. Attorney Alan Jackson was upset about the jury’s verdict sheet’s listing for count two, manslaughter while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Jackson’s issue was that the charge featured lesser charges that Read could be convicted of if the jury did not convict her of the main charges. Those listed charges only had listings for guilty. Jackson demanded that there be listings for not guilty as well.
In a tense exchange, the Judge told Jackson that forms in the Commonwealth were prepared in the manner that she prepared them. Jackson told the Judge that it may be the case, but it was incorrect and would give him a reason to appeal should his client be found guilty of those lesser charges.
After that exchange, Judge Cannone scolded Karen Read for smirking and laughing, asking her if she found something funny.
Cannone later returned with an updated form that was then distributed to the Jury. Jackson backed down from his threats of appealing based on the issue.
As the situation played out, blogger Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney and attorney Larry “the DUI Guy” Forman began implying in tweets that a possible “fix” was in and that Cannone was siding with the prosecution at the expense of Read.
Turtleboy Kearney also claimed that there were over 1,000 supporters of Read assembled outside of the courthouse awaiting her not guilty verdict.
A local farmer’s market had to cancel on Wednesday due to the presence of protestors in the area.
Kearney and Gorman did not rescind their accusations against the Judge once the new form was presented to the jury.
Deliberations resume later today.
