Closing statements in the Karen Read murder trial were delayed for a little over an hour on Tuesday as a juror was questioned and ultimately dismissed before the start of proceedings.
A female juror, described as resembling the character of “Pam Beesly” from the American version of the sitcom ‘The Office’ in a tweet by Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney, was brought before Judge Beverly Cannone twice and questioned.
According to Kearney’s account the juror, who he considered a “pro Karen Read” juror based on her reaction to the revelations of lead investigator Michael Proctor’s inappropriate text messages to other police officers, seemed angry and upset and “stormed” out of the court room after being dismissed by the Judge.
The press was unsure of what exactly happened leading up to the dismissal with some wondering if the juror was summoned as the judge was going to ask her to be the foreman of the jury, which is a custom in Massachusetts. Others wondered if a mistrial based on juror misconduct was about to happen.
In the end, the juror was dismissed without incident and closing arguments went on as planned. Alan Jackson of the defense, in another Massachusetts custom, presented first and focused on saying that the prosecution was going to ask the jurors to look away from the facts of the case and wanted the jurors to focus on what has been proven.
As he wanted them to focus, he introduced multiple distractions, including an allegation that ATF Agent Brian Higgins and friend Brian Albert murdered victim John O’Keefe and placed him on the front lawn of Albert’s home in a rushed attempt to frame Karen Read for the murder.
District attorney Adam Laly responded with a timeline of events, peppered with the voice mails Karen Read made after allegedly hitting O’Keefe with her vehicle. She screamed that she hated the victim and then accused him of cheating on her. She also did not make a 911 call to report O’Keefe missing despite calling friends and claiming that O’Keefe was dead and had been hit by a snowplow.
Laly countered Jackson’s claims that Higgins and Albert killed O’Keefe but pointing out that there was no evidence of O’Keefe’s body of a fight and that there were no footprints in the snow or drag marks. He also pointed out that both men were highly trained in law enforcement and speculated that if they were to murder someone, they would never dump the body in Albert’s front lawn for police to find.
After closing statements, the Judge took over an hour to give the jury instructions. She then selected a foreman for the jury, afterwards, the main jurors and alternate jurors were selected. “Turtleboy” Kearney expressed outrage that the other juror who he considered to be “pro Karen Read” was selected as an alternate and would not be taking part in deliberations.
Kearney had previously pledged to poison the jury pool. He has text what he claims to be juror’s reactions to various evidence presented in the case using their juror numbers but no other descriptions except that they were male or female.
The jury ended the first day of deliberations at 4:30PM with no verdict.
