The defense in Karen Read’s murder trial rested on Monday, after calling three witnesses and doing little to prove their client’s innocence before resting their case.
Read is on trial for second degree murder after an incident during a snowstorm in January of 2022 where she is alleged to have backed into her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, and leaving him to die on the lawn of a member of the prominent Albert family.
In a media campaign since the incident, Read has stated that she was being “framed” for the murder of O’Keefe by the Albert family, a large family that had ties throughout the area and who had put together a conspiracy to frame her for murder.
In her version of events, O’Keefe was killed by Brian Albert, who is the owner of the home where Read dropped O’Keefe off for an after party, his friend ATF Agent Brian Higgins and Albert’s nephew Collin Albert.
Read and her attorneys used blogger Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney as a spokesperson for a time, encouraging him to lead “spontaneous” demonstrations at the homes of witnesses in the case, where he would accuse the witnesses of killing O’Keefe and demand that they change their testimony and “admit their guilt.”
Kearney and Read’s camp split after Kearney was charged with multiple counts of felony witness intimidation. Kearney continued to campaign for Read, and himself, taking in large amounts of donations towards his own legal defense. His defense of Read made him a minor celebrity in the area, with supporters openly buying him meals and celebrating his efforts on behalf of Read.
Public opinion on the read case has been dominated by Read’s efforts to control the press. With the vast majority of commentators on CourtTV and other media outlets coming from the ranks of defense attorneys, the narrative since the start of the trial has been that prosecution has done everything wrong while the defense does not have to prove a thing as the prosecution never stood a chance to prove the Read’s guilt.
Monday’s testimony reflected that, with the defense using two experts from the federal investigation into the prosecution of the case who testified that the majority of their investigation involved building a cannon to test if O’Keefe could have thrown a drinking glass at Read’s taillight to cause the damage seen on Read’s car.
Despite this, the vast majority of commentators say that Read will either have a hung jury or that she will be acquitted of the charges.
Closing arguments in the case are expected to begin at 9AM ET later today. We’ll be covering them on our ReallyCoolNews YouTube channel.
