It’s been roughly a week since the world changed for the group of us who once worked at “the other place.” Since the decision was made to leave and the decision was made to cooperate with anyone who wanted to investigate the allegations against Daniel Jones, it’s literally been a whirlwind.
I think I described being a “GenXer” on Demon’s Show on Saturday pretty poorly as I was confronted by a question that my voice didn’t express enough grief in it to make an act of contrition to the assembled mob that had gathered to burn down that other place.
As a GenXer, I was born 60. My generation is characterized by the fact that we were all over the world at birth. We’re grumpy, we’re wicked funny, we’re also nearly completely self-reliant. Asking for help HURTS and most of us will do anything to move forward on our own, even if we have broken legs, hearts and brains, because we were without the strong family ties today’s kids enjoy.
My reaction to grief is not to cry, but to build things. Right now, I’m throwing my everything into building a YouTube channel to pick up the pieces of that other place and provide a place for those people who are still in shock over the loss of a big portion of their lives (3-8 hours a night spent together), and a community structure that will never be recreated.
I am amazed and thankful at the outpouring of people willing to step in and help, from making simple contributions like spreading our URLs, or giving constructive criticism when we need it, or yes, those stepping in to provide funding to assure that we have a fighting chance as a YouTube channel and a community.
While our numbers are still small (please share our links) and we’re going to have a slog to get to monetization (we’re about halfway to YouTube’s goal of 500 subscribers), I know Hank and Phil are with me for the Karen Read coverage and some of the panels, and I will continue to do the nightly news regardless of metrics. It’s a long haul, folks, we’re not going to set the world on fire out the door, but if the world comes, we’ll be ready.
Personally, I’m a mess. My sleeping patterns are off, I’m not eating as much, I can’t get my head back into the paper. I need a fairly stable routine to fall into to put the paper out each morning. I’m failing badly at it and starting tonight I’m going to power through the weirdness and get issues out again.
The world doesn’t wait for tears, but it’s nice to know that when they come, there are people there to pull you forward and help you through it. So, I thank you all for it. We’ll get through this. One minute, one second, and one day at a time.
And finally, to 2 SHAY and her conspirators who sent this abomination to my house:
Meh.
Meanies.
Ice cream.
May 18, 2025, can’t come soon enough.
I have work to do.
