YouTuber and activist for the homeless Regan Benson returned to the Englewood, Colorado, Civic Center to address the Englewood City Council Tuesday night, strangely, without livestreaming her comments or her time in the civic center on her own YouTube channel.
While chastising Mayor Othoniel Sierra for refusing to announce her from “Utopia, Colorado,” Benson saved her normal negative comments for the actual residents of Englewood in her remarks.
Benson stated that she spent $100.00 of her own money on “bogus” police reports filed by residents of Englewood against Movement 5280, an organization for the homeless that has taken up residence in downtown Englewood.
The YouTuber accused residents of Englewood of making false police reports against patrons of the facility and members of staff. She claimed one police report was made against Kelly Utter-McCloskey, who was recognized as Englewood’s “Citizen of the Year” in 2023 and helps run the facility, causing her name to be sent through a national crime bank search.
Benson reminded everyone that making a false police report was a crime, then went into an extended rant about the police in Englewood refusing to follow up on said false police reports. She then complained openly about an outstanding records request for copies of a 911 call from one of the complaints that had yet to be provided to her.
As previously stated, Benson’s address was strange as it was not livestreamed on her YouTube channel. Benson has regularly livestreamed from the Englewood Civic Center despite rules about filming in the building without permission of those who were caught on film.
Benson also would regularly use the “press” area of the city council chambers in order to provide her followers coverage from the actual city council meeting. This is the first time in recent history where Benson did not do so.
Also changed, Benson is apparently not filming as much in her self-appointed role as overseer of the police of Englewood, Colorado. Seemingly gone are the days when she spent hours following police officers from place to place and her well known confrontations and “testing of her first amendment rights” by insulting and degrading police officers and emergency workers.
The change may be due to Benson’s increased status within the Movement 5280 organization. She recently announced that her own non-profit organization, Helping Hands for Dignity, was now working in conjunction with Movement 5280 as she had backed away from her own efforts to do community outreach.
As part of her comments, she called out Englewood for not promoting that Movement 5280’s facility would be used as an overnight shelter in extreme weather conditions. She asked for an update to the automated homeless emergency line with the changes immediately.
